Zamioculcas

Zamioculcas comes from the dry part of Africa, which explains why it doesn’t like excess water. So if you happen to forget to water it once, twice, three times… it will forgive you and keep on growing. Although it has flourished for hundreds of years, it was only in 1996 that it began to make its way into homes, offices and hearts around the world.

 

It is an excellent plant for the novice gardener. It accepts dim light, tolerates drought and even neglect without suffering an identity crisis. It is highly resistant to disease and predators. If it gets too big and invades your space, cut it back. Nothing more. Its broad, smooth leaves reflect sunlight and brighten rooms.

 

Don’t taste it, keep it away from overly curious children or pets with a habit of nibbling, and wear gloves when caring for it. Otherwise, just enjoy its lush appearance.

 ZZ plants are widely used in malls and public spaces, and people often consider them artificial or fake simply because they look so good, with their fleshy, glossy leaves.

The Monstera Monkey is native to the rainforests of Central and South America. Popular for its leaf shape and fast growth, it likes to be watered once a week and only allowed to dry out between waterings. Wipe and spray the leaves regularly and find a bright spot. Growth will be slower in low light.

 

Perfect for a high shelf as it likes to spill over the pot as it grows. It can also be trained to climb along a support. Yellowing leaves indicate too much light or moisture shock, while crisp leaves indicate too little light or moisture.

Strelitzia Nicolai

“Life is better with Strelitzia” – that’s how any title for this plant queen should begin. Strelitzia is a stunning display of large tropical leaves that can reach up to seven metres in the wilds of southern Africa – not indoors, of course. Its spectacular flowers look very much like birds in flight with their wings outstretched.

 

Do you know who Strelitzia’s cousin is? That’s right, the banana tree. It’s just less fussy and easier to grow indoors. They are often mistaken for each other because of their seemingly similar leaves. To grow lush, it needs a very well-lit spot away from the cold. It’s also very important not to pot it. Otherwise, it’s on its own.

 

Fun fact: The Bird of Paradise is so revered in South Africa that its flower is engraved as a symbol on the 50-cent coin.
