Winter indoor plant care: Answers to your top questions
Plant care requirements vary significantly depending on the species and its origin. To achieve the best results, our primary goal is to replicate the plant’s natural habitat as closely as possible. Below, we outline the key adjustments you should make to your care routine.
Equipment for caring for plants in the cold season:
- Spray
- Air humidifier
- Watering can
- Supplemental/artificial grow light
#1. Use light bulbs that mimic natural light.
When the sunlight fades around five o’clock in the afternoon, we feel more tired and want to go home sooner. Plants experience a similar effect, though they don’t head to work. To compensate for reduced natural light, you can use light bulbs that mimic sunlight. Whether you choose specialized grow lights or standard bulbs, both can effectively support your plants.

#2. Is it necessary to water the plants in winter?
Winter means less light and less light means less water. We only water when the plant asks for it. We know when we feel with our fingers that the soil is dry a few centimetres above the surface. And when we do water, we water well – thoroughly and down to the roots. We allow the soil to dry completely between waterings and we use room-temperature water.
#3. Keep an eye on the room’s humidity levels.
Depending on how many plants you have, you can increase humidity by placing them next to each other, placing bowls of water and pebbles next to them, or using a humidifier. Spraying the leaves regularly will also add moisture.

#4. Keep the foliage clean and neat.
A build-up of dust on the leaves can block pores and harbour pests, so it’s important to clean the foliage regularly, and it’s especially important to do so in winter.
#5. Set realistic expectations for plant care during the cold season.
This is a time of year when we don’t have to worry about plants. They take care of themselves. They may not grow at all. They might look a little sad and down. Don’t worry about a few fallen leaves. It happens naturally. They just adapt to the changing seasons and conserve their energy as much as they can. Don’t be tempted to water more or feed them. It will do more harm than good.

#6. Play some music to the plants.
#7. Always ask for help. We are here to answer any questions you may have about plants.

The main tips are to water your plants infrequently and ensure they receive as much light as possible. Once you’ve created a nurturing environment for them, maintaining their care is straightforward: simply check on them weekly.
