The Venus fly trap (Dionaea muscipula) is a perennial carnivorous plant well known for consuming small insects. People grow it in part because of its unique and eye-catching look, but mostly because of what it does. Notoriously difficult to care for, these fickle moisture-lovers can still thrive in your home with the proper knowledge and care.

It thrives in swampy conditions and is intolerant of dry soil. Despite its reputation, do not hesitate to provide lots of water—this plant thrives on moisture. Avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely, as the Venus Flytrap cannot survive prolonged dryness.

The plant is watered only in the tray (from the bottom). The water used for irrigation must only be distilled (H2O) or reverse osmosis (super-purified without mineralization).
